NGORONGORO NATIONAL PARK TANZANIA

NGORONGORO NATIONAL PARK

A trip to the Crater means that you will find yourself surrounded by the impressive crater walls gazing at the striking display of wildlife that inhabit this confined area. You will see large herds of zebra and wildebeest grazing side by side with sleeping lions lazing in the midday sun.
And you are lucky, because here you will also find the endangered black
rhino. The crater, which is actually a type of collapsed volcano called a caldera, is often referred to as “Africa’s Eden” or “The 8th natural wonder of the world “and is a definite must-see should your travels take you to that area.
A trip to Northern Tanzania has to include the Ngorongoro, it is an exceptional place to interact with the Masaai and is one of the most beautiful natural wildlife safari sites in the world.
The advantage of staying at a hotel on the Crater rim is the view, the advantage of staying away from the Crater at nearby Karatu is that there are less people around, the lodges are smaller and more personal offering a range of activities such as walking and mountain biking.
The crater, which is actually a type of collapsed volcano called a caldera, is often referred to as “Africa’s Eden “or “The 8th natural wonder of the world” and is a definite must-see should your travels take you to that area. Of course the main attraction and focal point is the Ngorongoro Crater itself, but equally as amazing are the highlands that roll on around the Ngorongoro Crater.  The highlands is a vast, undulant volcanic landscape, dotted with crater and lakes, oozing minerals and soil fertility.  Without the conservation area protecting this, we would not have the traditional Masaai villages and life that still remain here today.  The highlands are an integral part of any Tanzania safari holiday.
The Empakaai Crater is a very deep crater lake located within the highlands area.  It is famous for its
concentrations of flamingos and the high, fertile rim allows for breathtaking views over to OlDoinyoLengai; a currently active volcano which the local Masaai call the ‘Mountain of the Gods’.

On days with clear skies you can catch an impressive glimpse of Lake Natron or even the peak of Kilimanjaro.  You can access Empakaai with an hour and half’s drive from any highlands accommodation.
